Most of the push is borrowed.
On 30 September, ESA's Juice spacecraft swings past Earth to steal a little of the planet's momentum on its way to Jupiter. It carries over three tonnes of propellant and still cannot get there on its own. That trade, less fuel in exchange for a hard appointment, is one we make in software every week.

You cannot patch a telescope.
On 21 August a 43-foot fairing closed around the Roman Space Telescope and the design stopped being editable. Most systems have a moment like that. Software teams rarely name theirs, which is why it arrives as a surprise.

The phone is the terminal now
Three more direct-to-device satellites went up on 5 August. The phone in a field worker's pocket is becoming the ground terminal, and that changes what an offline mode has to be.

A ground station burned and nothing missed a beat
A wildfire went through NASA's Madrid Deep Space Communications Complex on 24 July. Ninety people evacuated, a 70 metre dish went offline, and spacecraft across the solar system carried on talking. The failover was not clever engineering on the day. It was a decision made sixty years earlier.

Flight 13 carried something real
Starship's thirteenth test flight put 20 working Starlink V3 satellites into space, relit an engine, and landed the ship intact in the Indian Ocean. The booster came down hard. The interesting change is not the splashdown, it is that the payload was real for the first time.

Reuse is the feature, not the afterthought
On 9 July a single Falcon 9 booster flew for the 36th time, a reuse record. The number is impressive on its own, but the useful part is the discipline behind it, and what it says about building systems designed to be flown again.

Orbit is a shared bus now.
On 7 July a single Falcon 9 carried 81 satellites to orbit on a reused booster flying for the eleventh time. Getting to space used to be a bespoke, once-in-a-programme event. It is now scheduled shared transit, and the shift is a lesson about reuse that applies well beyond rockets.
