Colour got cheap, the install did not.

Micro RGB started life as a single 115-inch halo product at $29,999. The 2026 lineup runs from 55 inches at $1,599.99, with a 100-inch still to come. For anyone specifying screens into a physical space, that changes which line on the quote is actually the expensive one.

Samsung introduced Micro RGB last year as one 115-inch television at $29,999.99. The 2026 range runs 55, 65, 75, 85 and 115 inches, with a 100-inch due later this year, and the entry model starts at $1,599.99 (Notebookcheck, 2026; Samsung Newsroom, 2026). That is a whole display technology moving from halo to catalogue in about twelve months.

What Micro RGB actually is.

It is worth being precise, because the naming invites confusion. Micro RGB is not a micro-LED panel. It is still an LCD, still liquid crystal in front of a backlight. What changed is the backlight. Instead of a white or blue-white array behind the panel, it uses individually controlled red, green and blue LEDs under 100 microns each, so the light arriving at a pixel can already be close to the colour that pixel is meant to produce, rather than white light being filtered down to it (Engadget, 2026). Samsung cites VDE certification for 100 percent of the BT.2020 colour space on the 2026 sets (Notebookcheck, 2026).

The "micro" refers to the size of the backlight LEDs, not to one LED per pixel. That distinction matters when a supplier tells you they are quoting micro-LED.

Why a studio that puts screens in buildings pays attention.

We fit screens into retail spaces, exhibition stands, visitor experiences and front-of-house systems. On that work the brief usually arrives with a colour requirement attached, even if nobody writes it down as one. A brand has a defined orange, the client has seen it printed, and they will stand in the finished space and tell you the screen is wrong. Historically the honest answer was that a consumer panel could not hit a saturated brand colour at brightness, and the fix was a calibrated professional panel or an LED wall, priced accordingly.

A 55-inch panel that covers BT.2020 at sixteen hundred dollars removes that argument for a large class of jobs. Not all of them. But the ones where a single screen sits in a lit space showing brand graphics, which is most of them, no longer need the expensive answer on colour grounds alone.

The cost just moved, it did not disappear.

Here is the part that gets missed when a spec sheet gets cheaper. On an installation the panel has rarely been the whole cost, and it is about to be a much smaller share of it. What remains is all the work that a consumer television is not designed for.

  • 01Duty cycle. A retail unit runs twelve to sixteen hours a day, seven days a week. Consumer warranties assume domestic viewing, and a domestic warranty is not a maintenance plan.
  • 02Orientation. Portrait mounting is standard in retail and unsupported on most consumer sets, both thermally and in the firmware.
  • 03What happens when the source drops. A commercial display shows black. A television shows a menu, a no-signal card, or an advert for its own app store, in front of a customer.
  • 04Control. Scheduled power, remote status, a way to know a screen is off before the client rings to tell you.
  • 05Mounting, cable routing, ventilation and access for the day a unit fails.

None of that is solved by a better backlight. It is solved by the content pipeline, the player, the mount and the commissioning, and those costs are flat regardless of what the panel costs.

What we would do now.

Stop treating panel choice as the hard decision. On new briefs this autumn we would price the consumer Micro RGB option alongside the commercial one and let the operational requirements decide, rather than assuming the professional panel is mandatory because the colour matters. If the screen runs eight hours in a controlled space and gets switched off at night, the cheap panel is now genuinely good enough and the saving is real. If it runs open hours in portrait behind glass in direct sun, it is not, and no amount of BT.2020 coverage changes that.

The wider habit is the useful one. When a component gets dramatically cheaper, the instinct is to bank the saving. The better move is to work out which constraint the price drop actually removed, because it is usually a narrower one than the headline suggests, and then to check whether the money is better spent on the parts of the install nobody photographs.
